N is for Neocortex

A woman in labour is much more alert than any other time. Over time humans have developed a new part of the brain called the neocortex. It is important that any stimulus to the neocortex is kept to a minimum. It is this part of the brain which is responsible for the development of the intelligence, analysis, language, inhibitions and irrational fears. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Stimulus to the neocortex causes the human mind to interfere with the instinctive birthing process and so losing ability to completely let go and surrender to the birthing brain. ⠀⠀

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

A thoughtless word can lead to tension in the body ➡️ decrease in oxytocin ➡️ increase of adrenaline ➡️ can slow labour down. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Positive words can have the opposite effect and speed up labour. It is important that a woman in labour feels safe, unobserved and free from threat as she goes through each sensation.
