If I choose to have an epidural, does hypnobirthing still work?

The answer is simply YES! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Hypnobirthing is unfortunately so misunderstood. Over the weekend when I spoke to one of my expectant couples, I made a point that hypnobirthing is not just about a drug free birth. I mean it can be and until you experience that it almost sounds unbelievable right!! Like how 🤯 But hypnobirthing is about choices so u absolutely can of course choose to have an epidural. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Hypnobirthing is about knowing your options, feeling empowered, using your BRAIN (a technique I teach all of my couples) to make decisions and remaining at the centre of your birthing experience, regardless of if you use pain relief or what type of birth you have! Saying that, it’s really important to acknowledge that the mood of the room does not change just because you have an epidural. Too many times the lights will go on, conversation will start and the TV/Facetime will come on! All of this stimulating the neocortex (front of the brain) which should be still during labour. Not only that but this also disrupts the natural production of oxytocin which is key to birth your baby. You should still use all of your relaxation techniques - slow calm breathing, massage, relaxation scripts and visualisations. Likewise with birthing you placenta, I always tell my couples, it’s not over until you birth your placenta. I know what it’s like, baby is here and all you want to do is call your nearest and dearest but your placenta will be born more easily if lights are still dim, your play list is still playing and there is a feeling of calm and unobserved.
