Am I Allowed in Pregnancy?

Updated: Sep 26, 2019

This book is full of very useful information for any expectant mum to be. The main aim of the book is to inform women of their options and rights through all stages of pregnancy and birth. There are a few points of interest that I wanted to share with you. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ✨It is your body and your baby. You have the right to have the advantages and disadvantages clearly explained to you before you consent to any tests during antenatal care✨⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ✨Ultrasound can be invaluable when there is a possible problem that cannot be identified by other means, but it is often over used. Be informed of the particular purpose of any additional scans (outside of the typical scans at 12 and 20 weeks) and ask what difference it would make to the outcome✨⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ✨The decision about where to give birth rests entirely with you✨⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ✨Free-standing Midwifery Unit (FMU): sometimes referred to as Birth Centres, run entirely by midwives supporting women to give birth without interventions. ⠀ Alongside Midwifery Unit (AMU): different to FMU’s as they are under the influence of obstetric practise and transfers happen more frequently. Best to ask in advance for the current transfer figures for your local units✨⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ✨Hospital protocols are there for the guidance of the staff, they are not rules for you to follow. For example, if the protocol is for a vaginal exam (VE) every 4 hours, you have a right to decline. Midwives always have your best interest at heart. They are the experts in normality. Talk to them if there is anything that is making you uncomfortable and discuss your options ✨⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ✨You are entitled to privacy during the labour and birth✨⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ✨Research has clearly demonstrated that a woman has an easier labour if she is able to move around and adopt positions in which she feels comfortable✨⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ✨Induction of labour has an impact on birth experience and the health of women and their babies, and so needs to be clinically justified. (NICE, 2013)✨⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Any questions on any other topic, please let me know. #hypnobirthing
